I’m Susan Halliday and I
believe that children’s
books offer endless
opportunities for everyone!
One of the most exciting
things that I have done
recently was to help grant
MARCY from the TOOCOOL
series her biggest wish.
MARCY wanted her own series
– and she got it !
I suggested to Phil Kettle
that we write the 10 book
MARCY series after Phil told
me about the voices ….that’s
right – he used to hear
MARCY saying things like
“Hello … Mr Kettle. Are you
there ? Are you listening to
me ? Hello … Is there anyone
there ?... Come on Mr Kettle
- it’s MY turn for a book
series - me MARCY ! … Hello
….”
I thought he was joking at
first - then I started to
hear her too. “TOOCOOL’s had
the limelight for too long –
IT’S MY TURN – come on ! ” I
couldn’t believe my ears.
Writing the MARCY books
with Phil was lots of fun,
and I’m pleased to say that
since the books have been
published Phil and I have
stopped hearing MARCY’s
voice … well for the moment
!
While I’m planning to
write a few more books, it’s
fair to say that I’ve had
lots of different jobs in my
life. Most often I have set
my sights on trying to
ensure that the rights of
children and adults are
respected and protected. Of
course one of the most
important rights that you
have is to be literate – to
know how to read and how to
write. Always remember that
the key to unlocking your
dreams and enjoying life is
being able to read and
write.
As someone who has always
loved books, it won’t
surprise you that I collect
them – lots of them. Some of
my books are very very old –
especially some of the
children’s books. In fact
our house in Melbourne looks
like a library to some
people. If you come to visit
us you’re sure to find us
and the two fluffy white
dogs sitting on the couch in
front of the open fire,
reading !
